GH SCHOOLS FOUNDATION MAKES GRANT FOR PRESCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS

At its June meeting, the Board of Directors of the Grand Haven Schools Foundation voted to grant $51,000 to the Grand Haven Preschool Development Program for preschool scholarships for the 2015-2016 school year. The Board granted an additional $14,000 for professional development, curriculum enhancement, and materials to meet the individual needs of students.

The Grand Haven Preschool Development Program falls under the umbrella of Grand Haven Area Public Schools and is governed by its Board of Education. This tuition-based program is available to Tri-Cities children who are 2 ½ -5 years of age. The program emphasizes cognitive and social-emotional development through play and exploration and helps to ensure a smooth transition into kindergarten. Classes are held at Central, Rosy Mound, Robinson, Griffin, and Lake Hills Schools. Children may attend two, three, or four half days per week.

In the 2014-15 school year, 35 percent of children enrolled in the program were scholarship recipients. The Grand Haven Schools Foundation is dedicated to ensuring that all children, regardless of economic background, are afforded early learning opportunities.

Kate Augustyn, GHAPS Director of Special Education and Early Childhood Programs, said, “On behalf of GHAPS and all our preschool students and their families, I thank Grand Haven Schools Foundation for its generous gift for scholarships, professional development, curriculum and supplies. Having the ability to offer wonderful preschool experiences for all students is a vision realized. We are looking forward to an amazing 2015-16 school year.”

“The Grand Haven Schools Foundation thanks its donors and supporters for the opportunity to ensure kindergarten readiness for all our community’s children,” said GHSF Executive Director Anne McLaughlin.
